Complete Roofing System

Many people believe that roofing is about the asphalt shingles or metal roofing that is visible to the naked eye. But what most don’t know is that there is another layer of protection that is placed on top of the roof deck and under the roof covering that protects your roof and house from moisture or leak damage. This layer is called roofing underlayment.

What Is Roofing Underlayment?

Roofing underlayment is a type of synthetic roofing material that helps protect your home from leaks and moisture. It’s also used as an insulation layer beneath the roof deck. The three most common types of roofing underlayment are polyurethane, asphalt, and paper.

What Is Roof Underlayment Used For?

Roof underlayment is most commonly used to provide water resistance to the roof. It also acts as a thermal barrier between the roof deck and the outside environment, and can also be used to insulate the roof deck from high winds, cold and noise.

Types of Roofing Underlayment

Felt underlayments and synthetic underlayments are the two main types of underlayment. Each of them has its pros and cons. You should choose a roofing underlayment after considering many factors, like your geographical area, roofing materials, design of the roof, budget, etc.
Felt underlayment is a common type of roofing underlayment used in residential and commercial applications. It is inexpensive, easy to install, and does not require special tools or skills. However, felt can be easily damaged by rain and ice.

Synthetic underlayment is more commonly used because it has a longer life expectancy than felt (approximately 20 years), does not absorb water or snow build-up like felt, and resists rust and mold growth. However, synthetic roofing may be more expensive than felt and requires special tools for installation.

Peel and Stick Roof Underlayments

Roofing repairs necessitate the removal of any old shingles, nails, and underlayment to expose the underlying roof deck. New roof underlayment should then be applied in a smooth, even layer to protect your home from high winds and weather damage.

Peel and stick roof underlayment is a popular choice, but can be challenging to apply by one person. This underlayment comes in a roll and has a paper backing that peels off in two parts to allow for more control over the material. It’s important to place your underlayment smoothly with no ripples or bubbles, so it forms a strong bond with the roof deck.
