How to Apply Elastomeric Roof Coating Step by Step

If you want to extend the life of your roof, then roof coating is a must. Roof coatings can reduce heat transfer, thermal shock, and leaks. You can use roof coatings to benefit nearly any kind of roofing, and when the original coating wears away, you can recoat the roof to extend its life. If you have decided to move ahead with roof coating application, then you should know how to do it properly. Here is a look how to apply elastomeric roof coating.

Step 1: Choose the Right Roof Coating Products

First of all, you need to use the right roof coating product for your style of roof. It’s easier to treat sloped roofs that don’t have drainage issues, as any reflective white roof coating will work. Flat roofs and roofs with drainage problems require more attention to prevent standing water and moisture from becoming a problem. The coating supply company can help you select the right product for your roof.

Step 2: Wash the Entire Roof Surface

Before you worry about how to apply elastomeric roof coating, you’ll need to clean the roof thoroughly. First, remove all debris from the surface. Use a sprayer or a pressure washer for the cleaning, taking care not to disturb the roof membrane and lap seams. After you clean the roof, remove any loose materials. Let the roof dry completely before you apply the coating. Keep in mind that the roof may take up to 24 hours to finish drying.

Step 3: Repair Any Damage

You can fix some kinds of damage, such as minor leaks, when you coat the roof. However, it is better to go ahead and make repairs before you apply the coating. Coating over damage can make your coating wear out faster, making the coating only a quick fix. Make sure leaks, broken or cracked shingles, rust, and other flaws are appropriately addressed to extend the life of your roof and your roof coating.

Step 4: Check the Weather Forecast

You will want to reserve at least two full days for the roof coating process. Ideally, you should coat your roof when you are expecting moderate, dry, and sunny weather. Temperature extremes that cause frost or dew can interfere with your coating. Remember that coating will take longer to dry in cold temperatures or humid weather, so choose your timing carefully.

Step 5: Apply Polyester Membrane and Patching Compound

Tietex polyester membranes are 100% polyester, stitch-bonded fabrics that do not rely on adhesives. These membranes are very strong and help to reinforce roof membranes while providing water protection. The Tietex polyester membranes come in rolls, and you should place them over large cracks, joints, and seams along the roof. Fill in any large cracks using Elasto White Patching Compound, which can fill voids and cracks to prevent water ponding. For additional strength, use the Elasto White Patching Compound with added polyester. Remember that the patching compound will need to dry completely before you move forward with the roof coating process.

Step 6: Waterproof Porous Surfaces

If you have any surfaces that are porous or that have not been previously treated with a waterproofing agent, you should treat them with an emulsion, such as Elastomeric Emulsion, or a primer, depending on the roofing material. You can apply the waterproofing agent with a roller, brush, or spray equipment. Allow the emulsion or primer to dry completely before moving on to the next step for coating your roof.

Step 7: Use Two Coats

Before you apply the coating, you should mix it thoroughly in the container until it is all the same color and consistency. Are you using a brush or bristle broom? If so, use long, even strokes, and don’t brush the same area repeatedly. Using a roller? Choose a medium or long nap designed to work on textured surfaces. Using a sprayer? Pick an airless one with a minimum working pressure of 3,000 PSI. Our best tip for how to apply elastomeric roof coating with even coverage in any application method is to use two coats. Additionally, don’t try to go back and touch up any areas of the coating until it is completely dry. Also, make sure the coating is dried and cured thoroughly between the first and second coats. This can take 24 hours or longer, depending on what the weather is like. When you are in need of roof coating materials in Tucson, go with Tucson Rubberized Coatings.
